How we prepare

Four steps, across both stages

  1. Cambridge Select Insight is neither the ISEB pre-test nor the Consortium assessment, so we start by testing your daughter on its shape rather than on a generic 11+ paper.

  2. An hour of numerical, verbal and non-verbal work on a computer. Practised on screen, because pacing a timed computer test is a different skill from pacing a paper one.

  3. Creative writing and analysis in English, problem solving in maths, 45 minutes each. These come six weeks after Stage 1, and the gap is where most families lose momentum.

  4. Interviews run through January alongside music auditions for those who qualify. We rehearse until the conversation feels ordinary.

Starting late?

There are two doors here rather than one, which helps. If Stage 1 is close, a short run goes on timed on-screen reasoning, because that is what decides whether your daughter reaches Stage 2 at all. If Stage 1 is already sat and she has been invited back, six weeks on the two written papers is a genuinely useful amount of time.

The practical questions

No. The City of London Corporation is the proprietor of both City of London School for Girls and City of London School, along with City of London Freemen's School and City Junior School. They are separate schools with separate admissions, and their assessments are different. CLSG sits at the Barbican and City of London School on the Embankment. If you have read about "the City of London 11+" and found a 105-minute online assessment across six sections, that is the boys' school, not this one.

Two stages. First Cambridge Select Insight, a 60-minute computer-based test assessing numerical, verbal and non-verbal skills. Then, for candidates who do well, two 45-minute written papers in January: english (creative writing and analytical skills), and mathematics (problem solving). Interviews follow.

It is the computer-based platform CLSG uses for its first stage. It is neither the ISEB Common Pre-Test nor the London 11+ Consortium assessment, which are the two most families have heard of, so practice bought for either of those is practice for a different test. It runs an hour and covers numerical, verbal and non-verbal skills.

Registration closes Friday 30 October 2026, with a fee of £192 for uk applicants and £300 for international applicants. The first assessment runs 13 to 18 November 2026, the second is on Wednesday 6 January 2027, interviews run 11 to 21 January 2027, and offers are emailed on Friday 12 February 2027.

No. The School states that offers are unconditional, and accepting one requires a deposit. Places, scholarships and bursaries are all offered together on Friday 12 February 2027, so a family weighing a scholarship against another school's plain offer has both numbers on the same day rather than waiting.

Most families we work with start twelve to eighteen months out. That leaves room to build the underlying English and maths before anything is timed, and to spend the final autumn on Cambridge Select Insight and the January English and maths papers. Shorter runs work and are common — we have prepared candidates in under four months — but a short run is triage rather than a full pass, and we will be straight with you about what is realistic before you book anything.

Every one of our CLSG tutors is an alumna of the school and sat this assessment themselves. We teach in person in London and online anywhere in the UK. Tutoring is charged per hour from £60, with no contracts and no packages to buy up front. The first lesson is no commitment and you can stop at any time, and a free 20-minute consultation comes first.
