How we prepare

Four steps, across three years

  1. St Paul's takes 13+ registrations through ISEB from July, three years before entry. The deadline is ISEB's rather than the School's, which is the first thing families get wrong here.

  2. Sat in October or November, preferably at your son's current school. This is the filter: the January papers are for candidates who get through it.

  3. The January maths paper runs 75 minutes, which is long for this round, alongside 45 minutes of English. Building the stamina is a different job from building the accuracy.

  4. The Saturday interview covers numeracy and critical analysis of source material as well as co-curricular interests. It sits between a conversation and a paper, and we rehearse it as both.

Missed out, or starting late?

Two different answers here. If your son has been declined but invited to be reassessed in Year 8, that is a real route and we prepare candidates for it. If you are simply starting late, the constraint is the pre-test in Year 6 rather than the January papers, so the honest question is how much runway is left before the autumn.

The practical questions

There is a third outcome most schools do not offer, and almost nothing written about St Paul's mentions it. Alongside an offer and a decline, candidates who show potential can be invited to be reassessed in Year 8, with further testing in September and interviews in October. It is an invitation to reapply rather than a guarantee of a place, but for a family whose son narrowly misses at 13+ it is the difference between the door being shut and being asked back.

Through ISEB, not through the School directly, which surprises people and means the deadline is ISEB's. Candidates for 13+ 2029 entry register from July 2026 onwards, and there is no charge to register with ISEB. The pre-test itself is sat in october or november of year 6, preferably at your son's current school, or at St Paul's in November.

Two, in January of Year 7: Mathematics, 75 minutes, and English, 45 minutes. The 75-minute maths paper is long by the standards of this round, and it is the one worth building stamina for rather than only accuracy.

A Saturday in late January or early February. Numeracy, critical analysis of source material, and a discussion of the candidate's co-curricular interests. It is not purely conversational: there is numeracy and there is source material to analyse, so it sits somewhere between an interview and an assessment.

A first decision, on who goes through to the January papers, comes in mid-December. Interview outcomes follow at the end of February. Registration is three years ahead of entry, so the whole process runs from Year 6 to a place in Year 9.

Most families we work with start twelve to eighteen months out. That leaves room to build the underlying English and maths before anything is timed, and to spend the final autumn on the 75-minute maths paper and the Saturday interview. Shorter runs work and are common — we have prepared candidates in under four months — but a short run is triage rather than a full pass, and we will be straight with you about what is realistic before you book anything.

Three outcomes, not two

Almost every school has two answers: an offer or a decline. St Paul's publishes a third. A candidate who shows potential without being offered a place can be invited to be reassessed in Year 8, with further testing in September and interviews in October.

Worth being precise about what this is: an invitation to reapply, not a guarantee of a place at the second attempt. But it is a route that stays open where most schools close, and a family who does not know it exists will read a December decision as the end. The School's own selection procedure page sets out all three.

Four ways in, and 13+ is the main one

St Paul's admits at 7+ and 11+ into St Paul's Juniors, which feeds the senior school, and at 13+ and 16+ directly. The number names the assessment rather than the year group your son joins, and 13+ registration opens three years before entry.
