Word of the Day

One five-letter word a day, six guesses, and then what it actually means. Two minutes a day on the vocabulary that decides comprehension marks.

Why vocabulary, and why daily

Comprehension papers are not really reading tests. A child who does not know what tacit or glean means loses the sentence, then the paragraph, then the question about the paragraph. Vocabulary is the quiet reason two children of equal ability score differently.

It is also the hardest thing to cram. Words stick through repeated meeting over months, which is why this is one word a day rather than a list of two hundred to learn in March.

Each word here was chosen for the year group it is aimed at, and arrives with a meaning and a sentence showing it used properly — because a word guessed and not understood has taught nobody anything.

The daily word builds vocabulary. A full paper, marked question by question, tells you which topics need the work.
