How we prepare

Four steps, built around six sections

We test all six online sections, including the two most preparation skips, plus a timed creative writing task. That tells us where the gaps actually are rather than where they usually are.
Lesson content and homework are rewritten each week against the results, aligned to Key Stage 2 for the maths and to the comprehension and writing City of London actually sets.
The adaptive sections are practised on a screen, because pacing without the option to go back is a skill in itself. The story is practised handwritten, to the real 30 minutes.
Candidates who score well come back in January for a short interview and a group activity. We rehearse both until they feel ordinary.

The practical questions

The entrance assessment is sat on Friday 27 November 2026, with registration closing Monday 2 November 2026. Candidates who score well are invited back in January 2027 for an interview and a group activity, offers are made in mid february 2027, and acceptances are due in early March.

Two parts on the same day. Part 1 is a 105-minute online test across six sections: Mathematics (20 minutes), English (30 minutes), Non-verbal Reasoning (10 minutes), Verbal Reasoning (10 minutes), Puzzles and Problem Solving (15 minutes), Creative Comprehension (20 minutes). Part 2 is a 30-minute creative writing task, a short story from a prompt, handwritten unless access arrangements have been approved.

Mathematics, Non-verbal Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning adapt to your child's answers, so the questions get harder or easier as they go and there is no going back to change an answer. English, Puzzles and Problem Solving and Creative Comprehension are not adaptive, so answers there can be reviewed before the section ends. That difference matters more than any individual topic, because it means two different exam habits are needed in a single morning.

The online part has the same shape. City of London and Dulwich College publish the same six online sections, the same durations and the same three adaptive sections. Neither school mentions the other. For a family applying to both, screen practice transfers directly. The writing task does not: City of London allows 30 minutes for a short story from a prompt, Dulwich allows 20 with five of those for planning. So if your child is applying to both, screen practice counts twice, but the writing preparation needs doing separately for each.

No. The School's admissions rounds are 10+, 11+, 16+ and nothing else. If you have been told to prepare for a City of London 13+, that round does not exist — the main entry point is the 11+, sat in Year 6, and there is an additional 10+ intake a year earlier.

January 2027, for candidates who score well in the assessments. It lasts around 15 to 20 minutes, and there is a group activity on the same visit on the same visit. Neither is something a child can revise for, which is exactly why they unsettle families more than the written parts. What helps is having had the conversation before, somewhere that is not your kitchen.

Most families we work with start around twelve to eighteen months out, which for the 11+ means the spring or summer of Year 5. That leaves room to build the underlying maths and English before moving to timed practice across all six sections in the autumn of Year 6. Shorter runs work and are common, but Puzzles and Problem Solving and Creative Comprehension are the two sections generic 11+ courses leave out, and they are the ones that need the run-up.

Every route in

Three ways in, and no 13+

Children join City of London at 10+ into Year 6, at 11+ into Year 7, or at 16+ into the sixth form. There is no 13+ round, which catches out families comparing this School with the boarding schools alongside it. The number names the assessment, not the year group your child joins, and each round is sat the academic year before entry.
