Part 1 — 95 minutes (online)

  • Reading comprehension + grammar/punctuation — English literacy section.
  • Mathematics — Arithmetic and problem-solving.
  • Spatial/visual reasoning — Pattern and spatial recognition.
  • Puzzles — Logic and lateral thinking.
  • Creative comprehension — Analytical response to a creative stimulus.

Part 2 — 30 minutes: Creative Writing

  • Image-based prompt — Candidates write in response to a visual stimulus.
  • Marked on — Imagination, creativity, organisation, and sentence structure.

  • Interview + group activity — Assesses communication, curiosity, and collaborative thinking.

Planning ahead

Year 4–5
Start Here

Begin English comprehension and analytical writing preparation alongside core Maths. Register with City of London School by the first Monday of November in Year 6.

Year 5 — September to November (Year 6)
Intensive Prep

Full preparation for City of London's two-part assessment. Part 1: online practice across reading, grammar, Maths, spatial reasoning, puzzles, and creative comprehension. Part 2: timed creative writing practice from visual prompts — developing imagination, structure, and sentence-level accuracy.

Last Friday of November, Year 6
Exam Day

Sit the City of London 11+ assessment: 95-minute online test (Part 1) followed by a 30-minute handwritten creative writing paper (Part 2). Registration must be completed by the first Monday of November.

January Year 6
Interviews

Shortlisted candidates attend for interview and group activity. Successful candidates receive offers for September Year 7 entry.
