How we prepare

Four steps, across all three stages

  1. English, maths and General Comprehension, not just the first two. The third paper is where a diagnostic most often finds something worth knowing a year early.

  2. Adaptive, computer-based and sat before the written papers. It is a gate rather than the assessment proper, and pacing on screen is what it rewards.

  3. The English paper is close reading of literary prose; the maths moves from arithmetic into multi-part questions testing whether a new idea can be picked up mid-paper. Both are practised as they are set.

  4. Assessing creativity, engagement and independent thought. We rehearse having an opinion and following it up, which is what that description actually asks for.

Starting late?

A short run here goes on General Comprehension first, which is counter-intuitive and correct: it is a third of the written marks and the paper a late-starting candidate is least likely to have met, so it is where the fastest gains are. English and maths come second because most children arrive with something already built there. The hard limit is the application deadline in November.

No. The Worshipful Company of Mercers administers both St Paul's Girls' School and St Paul's School, and SPGS was founded in 1904 from part of the endowment John Colet left the boys' school. They are separate schools with separate governance and different admissions. They sit about a mile apart — St Paul's Girls' at Brook Green and St Paul's School at Barnes — and they take pupils at different ages. St Paul's Girls' runs 11+ and 16+ only; the boys' school runs 7+, 11+, 13+ and 16+, with 13+ its main external round.

The ISEB Common Pre-Test, which is adaptive, computer-based and covers verbal reasoning, mathematics and non-verbal reasoning. Then three written papers on one day. Then an interview of about 20 minutes, assessing creativity, engagement and the capacity for independent thought. Offers weigh all three together with a school reference.

Applications close Friday 6 November 2026, 9am, with a fee of £265, non-refundable, and waived for candidates applying for a bursary only. The ISEB pre-test must be sat by wednesday 18 november 2026, the three written papers are on Saturday 5 December 2026, interviews are on Saturday 16 or Sunday 24 January 2027, offers go out Friday 12 February 2027 and acceptances are due by Tuesday 2 March 2027.

No. There are two entry points, 11+ into Year 7 and 16+ into the sixth form. Families who have been reading about the boys' school often expect a 13+ round here because that school has one; St Paul's Girls' does not, so the 11+ in Year 6 is the entry to plan for.

Most families we work with start twelve to eighteen months out. That leaves room to build the underlying English and maths before anything is timed, and to spend the final autumn on the three written papers, General Comprehension included. Shorter runs work and are common — we have prepared candidates in under four months — but a short run is triage rather than a full pass, and we will be straight with you about what is realistic before you book anything.

Every one of our St Paul's Girls' tutors is an alumna of the school and sat this assessment themselves. We teach in person in London and online anywhere in the UK. The paper nobody prepares for

There are three written papers, not two

English and mathematics are what every family prepares. St Paul’s Girls’ sets a third, General Comprehension, sat on the same day and weighted alongside the other two.

English

Close reading of a passage of literary prose, with up to six questions on extracting information, on linguistic effects and on inference.

Mathematics

Two sections: fundamental arithmetic and problem solving, then multi-part questions testing the ability to assimilate new ideas.

General Comprehension · the one to plan for

Built around a theme, testing deduction, inference, and the extraction and organisation of information from visual, numerical or written material.

It is not an English paper and it is not a maths paper. A girl who has been drilled in both can still meet it having never seen anything like it, which is exactly why it is worth naming a year out rather than a fortnight before.
