How we prepare

Four steps, whichever route you are on

  1. Early Decision registers three years before entry; Later Decision registers in Year 7. The assessment is the same either way, but the calendar is completely different, and this is the first thing to settle.

  2. Year 6 for Early Decision, Year 7 for Later Decision. Same test, different year, and preparing to the wrong calendar is the failure mode here.

  3. The second stage is competitive rather than qualifying, so the target is a relative standard rather than a pass mark. We work to that with timed papers and real marking.

  4. Sat alongside the written papers and not revisable. We rehearse the format so a child who has ideas is able to offer them in a room of strangers.

Then you are looking at Later Decision, and that is a real route rather than a fallback. The School says: "A substantial number of places will be held open for Later Decision candidates." Registration runs to 1 November of Year 7, so a family who finds the earlier date gone has not lost their chance.

The practical questions

They are two separate routes into the same year group, with two separate registration deadlines. Early Decision: register by 15 september, three years before entry, the iseb pre-test in the autumn of year 6, then an assessment day in early january. Later Decision: register by 1 november of year 7, nearly two years before entry, the iseb pre-test in the autumn of year 7, then second-stage assessments in march or april of year 7. You are in one or the other, and most pages about this school describe only one of them.

No. The School states: "A substantial number of places will be held open for Later Decision candidates." It is a route with places attached rather than a waiting list, so a family who finds the September deadline gone has not lost their chance, and a family choosing deliberately between the two is choosing on timing rather than on odds.

Four things: iseb pre-test, english and mathematics examinations, group discussion activity, school reference. The group discussion activity is the one families do not expect and cannot revise for. Both routes are assessed on the same four components; only the timing differs.

On their own timetable, in Year 8, after the main assessment is settled: academic scholarships late march of year 8, and co-curricular late april or early may of year 8.

No. The International Baccalaureate, rather than A Levels. That is a genuine difference rather than a detail: a family comparing Sevenoaks with the other sixth forms on this site is comparing two different qualifications, and the IB suits a child who wants breadth over early specialisation.

Most families we work with start twelve to eighteen months out. That leaves room to build the underlying English and maths before anything is timed, and to spend the final autumn on the English and maths papers and the group discussion. Shorter runs work and are common — we have prepared candidates in under four months — but a short run is triage rather than a full pass, and we will be straight with you about what is realistic before you book anything.

Sevenoaks admits at 11+, 13+ and 16+. The 13+ round is the one worth reading twice, because it runs as two separate routes with deadlines a year apart in a child's life. Sixth form here is the International Baccalaureate rather than A Levels.
