How we prepare

Four steps, built around writing rather than reasoning

  1. A full 75-minute English paper and a full 75-minute maths paper, handwritten and marked in-house. No reasoning, because NLCS sets none — the diagnostic tests what the school tests.

  2. The English paper carries both, and they are marked as one. We build close reading and extended writing side by side rather than treating comprehension as a warm-up.

  3. Seventy-five minutes is a long paper for a Year 6 child. We build the stamina and the handwriting speed alongside the mathematics, because losing marks to running out of time is the commonest way a strong candidate underperforms here.

  4. The interview asks your daughter to do maths and English out loud. That is a different skill from doing it on paper, and it is the part families do not prepare for. We rehearse it until thinking aloud feels normal.

Starting late?

The hard limit is the registration deadline in November of Year 6, not the preparation. If registration is still open there is real work to do — we would open with a full diagnostic and spend most of a short run on the English paper, which is where the marks move fastest. If it has closed, NLCS offers no second round at 11+ and the honest next option is Sixth Form.

Before you book

The practical questions

Neither. The entrance exams are sat on paper rather than on a computer, and NLCS sets no verbal or non-verbal reasoning test. That makes NLCS the outlier among the top London girls' day schools: Godolphin and Latymer and South Hampstead sit the London 11+ Consortium's online assessment, St Paul's Girls' uses the ISEB pre-test, and City of London School for Girls uses Cambridge Select Insight. All of those are computer-based and all test verbal or non-verbal reasoning. NLCS tests comprehension, writing and maths, by hand.

Two papers, 150 minutes in total: english (75 minutes, comprehension and creative writing), and mathematics (75 minutes, one paper). They are sat on Thursday 3 December 2026.

Only candidates who do well in the written papers are invited. A 30-minute interview, including spoken maths and English questions. Interviews run Monday 11 to Friday 22 January 2027. The spoken maths and English are the part families do not expect — it is not a conversation about hobbies, and a girl used to working only on paper can find that shift harder than the papers themselves.

About 70 to 75 places for external candidates. Roughly 45 more girls move up from the Junior School. Registration closes Friday 13 November 2026, 4pm, which is also the deadline for bursary, music and sport scholarship applications — a single date that catches families who assume the funding deadlines come later.

No. NLCS does not offer entry into Year 11. Occasional places do come up in Years 8, 9 and 10 by expression of interest, but they depend on someone leaving. The two rounds you can plan for are 11+ and Sixth Form.

Most families we work with start twelve to eighteen months out. That leaves room to build the underlying English and maths before anything is timed, and to spend the final autumn on the two written papers and the spoken maths and English at interview. Shorter runs work and are common — we have prepared candidates in under four months — but a short run is triage rather than a full pass, and we will be straight with you about what is realistic before you book anything.

Every one of our NLCS tutors is an alumna of the school and sat this assessment themselves. We teach in person in London and online anywhere in the UK. Tutoring is charged per hour from £60, with no contracts and no packages to buy up front. The first lesson is no commitment and you can stop at any time, and a free 20-minute consultation comes first.

That is close to unique among the schools a North London family usually applies to alongside it, and it means the reasoning drilling that dominates London 11+ preparation earns nothing here.

Two ways in, and no Year 11

NLCS takes girls at 11+ and again into the Sixth Form. Occasional places come up in Years 8 to 10 by expression of interest, and nlcs does not offer entry into year 11.
