How we prepare

Four steps, all of them in Year 6

  1. You cannot apply for both, and the assessment happens once in Year 6 either way. That choice is worth making on purpose rather than by default, and it is the first conversation we have.

  2. King's publishes specimen papers, which most of the schools we cover do not. Preparation here can be measured against the School's own format instead of somebody's reconstruction.

  3. King's sets its own tests rather than using the ISEB pre-test, sat in December of Year 6. Verbal reasoning is the section families most often under-practise because it is not on the school curriculum.

  4. Interviews run in December and January alongside the written tests, with offers in February. We rehearse the format until it feels ordinary.

Suggested timeline, 11+ and 13+ entry

Already in Year 7?

Then the King's 13+ route has closed, and we would rather say so than take a booking for it. Both entry points are assessed in Year 6 here, which is the opposite of how 13+ works almost everywhere else. Sixth-form entry remains open, and a free consultation will establish what is actually available.

Before you book

The practical questions

No, and this is the single most consequential fact about this school. King's states: "All children are assessed in year 6 and offers for both the 11+ and 13+ entry points are made in February of year 6." So 13+ here is assessed in Year 6, two years earlier than at every other school on this site, and an offer made in February of Year 6 is for entry two years later. A family planning to prepare for a King's 13+ during Year 7 has already missed it.

No. The School says so outright: "It is not possible to apply for both 11+ and 13+ entry." Every child is assessed once, in Year 6, and you choose which entry point you are applying for before that. It is a real decision rather than a formality, and it is worth making it deliberately rather than by default.

Entry to King's at 11+ is via competitive tests and interviews which take place in December/January of year 6. King's sets its own tests rather than using the ISEB pre-test: English, mathematics and verbal reasoning, sat in December of Year 6, with interviews in January and offers in mid-February. Registration closes Monday 2 November.

King's publishes specimen papers on its own admissions pages, so preparation here can be against the School's real format rather than a reconstruction. That is unusual among the schools we cover — Eton and Winchester publish nothing at all about their tests — and it means preparation here can be measured against the real thing rather than against somebody's reconstruction.

King's becomes co-educational at 11+ from September 2033. Entry at 11+ and 13+ is boys only until then. It changes nothing for a family applying now, and it changes a great deal for a family with a daughter currently in Reception, which is why it is on this page rather than buried.

Most families we work with start twelve to eighteen months out. That leaves room to build the underlying English and maths before anything is timed, and to spend the final autumn on the School's own English, maths and verbal reasoning papers and the January interview. Shorter runs work and are common — we have prepared candidates in under four months — but a short run is triage rather than a full pass, and we will be straight with you about what is realistic before you book anything.

The part that is two years earlier than you think

King's assesses 13+ candidates in Year 6

At every other school on this site, 13+ means an assessment in Year 8. At King's it does not. Every candidate is assessed in Year 6, whichever entry point they applied for, and offers for both are made that February for entry either one year or three years later.

Six ways in, and two of them are assessed on the same day

King's admits at 7+, 8+ and 9+ into the Junior School, at 11+ and 13+ into the senior school, and at 16+ into the sixth form. The unusual part is that 11+ and 13+ are both assessed in Year 6, and a candidate may apply for one or the other, not both.
