Preparing hard for December and treating January as a formality is preparing for half the process.

The College recommends registering by the beginning of October, and at least a year before entry. It publishes a recommendation rather than a hard deadline. That is softer than most schools on this site, several of which close registration on a fixed date a year or more before assessment, so it is worth treating the recommendation as a deadline rather than a suggestion.

Maths, English, and verbal and non-verbal reasoning, sat early in December of the year before joining. The College does not publish paper durations, so anyone quoting you timings for this assessment is quoting something the College has not said.

No. Lower School Taster Days run in June, September and November. These are visits, not assessments. They are worth going to, and they are not being marked. The two that count are the Academic Assessment Day in December and the Interview and Activities Day in January.

Three things worth knowing you will not find: paper durations for the academic assessment day; the number of places at each entry point; a hard registration deadline, as opposed to the recommendation above. We would rather say that than fill the gaps from a tutoring blog. The College also runs 12+ and 14+ entry, handled by contacting admissions directly. It publishes no assessment format for either, so neither is described here.

Most families we work with start twelve to eighteen months out. That leaves room to build the underlying English and maths before anything is timed, and to spend the final autumn on the December papers and the January interviews and activities. Shorter runs work and are common — we have prepared candidates in under four months — but a short run is triage rather than a full pass, and we will be straight with you about what is realistic before you book anything.
